Bouts of insomnia are relatively common during pregnancy. For example, it can be challenging for expectant mothers to find a comfortable sleeping position, especially as their belly grows. Preparing to give birth can also stress out even the calmest women to the point where racing thoughts keep them up late into the night. Unfortunately, when insomnia strikes, pregnant women cannot simply take an over-the-counter or prescription sleep aid. They can, however, try a few natural remedies.

How to Prevent Insomnia During Pregnancy

1. Exercise Daily

It probably comes as no surprise that getting in some physical activity every day can help you sleep better at night. Some gentle, low-impact exercise will prompt quality rest by making you physically tired and relieving stress and anxiety. Yoga, light walks or jogs, and treading water in the pool are all excellent examples.

2. Time Your Mealspregnancy

Heartburn and indigestion are common during pregnancy. To prevent these symptoms from keeping you up at night, avoid eating dinner shortly before going to bed. And, if it becomes apparent that certain foods trigger gastrointestinal distress, avoid consuming them before laying down.

3. Prepare Your Bedroom

People tend to fall asleep fastest in a cool, dark room. Keep your bedroom at around 65 degrees for optimal sleep, and don’t use it for anything other than rest. If you watch television or browse social media on your phone while in bed, your brain is not going to associate the room with restful sleep and will have a hard time winding down at the end of the day.
