From infancy on, children of all ages can get toothaches. Whether the child is teething or has a cavity, pain and inflammation in the mouth hurts, and your little one will surely show it. While you should always visit the pediatric dentist if you suspect your child has a cavity, there are a few remedies you can employ to ease the pain in the meantime.

3 Ways to Relieve Toothaches Until You Can See a Pediatric Dentist

1. Frozen Washcloth or Toys

Ice helps halt the pain response to the brain. Freeze a wet washcloth and let your child gnaw on it. While this is a classic trick for teething babies, it also works well when a child of any age has a toothache. Toys designed for teething also work well for freezing.

2. Ice-Cold Edibles

However, don’t give your infant frozen berries because they could be a choking hazard; instead, stick to a real fruit popsicle without added sugar. The frozen treat will numb the pain as well as offer a welcome distraction.

3. Pain Reliever

Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are a safe way to provide temporary pain relief, provided you abide by the recommended dosage. Look for pain medication specially formulated for infants and children and read all instructions carefully. If you’re not sure, always consult your doctor.
