Golf is often understood as a sport for adults. Unlike soccer, basketball, or baseball, it's not a recreational activity that's typically offered to kids through their schools. But that doesn't mean parents with a passion for the sport shouldn’t encourage their child to develop an interest in golf. Etter's Golf Center, in Cincinnati, OH, shares a few ideas for how to get your kid swinging a nine iron.

How to Get Your Children Interested in Playing Golf

Trips to the Driving Range

Kids love to go on trips with their parents. One of the best ways to inspire an interest in golf is to invite them to the driving range whenever you go. Although they probably won't know what a driving range is at first, the novelty of the trip will give it a sense of adventure for your child. Then, once you're there, he or she will practice swinging a golf club for the first time.

Use Practice as a Teaching Opportunity

golfOne of the fantastic aspects of golf is the way that it can create a bond between a parent and their kid. With the right, gentle approach, parents can teach their kids about posture, swing, and all the other intricate mechanics that go into the game of golf. Over time, this guidance will develop into a new platform for your relationship, as you take your child further into the world of golf.

Mini-Golf

Depending on how old your child is, mini-golf is a very dependable first step along the path to introducing children to the adult version of the sport. Young children, especially, will be drawn to the thrilling spectacle of a mini-golf course: the pinwheels and pirates and dragons and other fantastical obstacles and characters that fill the most imaginative courses. After a year of mini-golf, you can start incorporating the real thing.

In addition to mini-golf, the PGA offers a junior league, which is a great introduction for young players interested in golf.  You can start training for it now at Etter’s Golf Center. Visit www.pga.com for more information.

If you want to introduce your son or daughter to the game of golf, there are few better ways in the greater Cincinnati area than Etter's Golf Center. And if your kid isn't quite ready for the top-flight lessons from one of the golf center's professional instructors, the grounds also offers two mini-golf courses complete with castles, lighthouses, and plenty of other props to spark your kid's imagination.
