If you experience a severe infection or advanced periodontal disease, your dentist will likely recommend scaling and root planing as the solution. This process removes plaque, bacteria, and tartar from the teeth and root surfaces, which are then smoothed over to deter future bacterial buildup. Follow these aftercare tips to prevent reinfection.

Do:

Take extra cleaning measures. dentist

Gently remove plaque from teeth and gums two to three times daily following your treatment. Use a soft-bristle brush and avoid exerting too much pressure, which can wear away gum tissue.

Watch what you eat.

Don’t eat small, hard foods, which are prone to getting stuck in the gums. If you had an extensive procedure done, steer clear of foods that require a lot of chewing—like meat and raw vegetables—for a few days.

Manage your discomfort.

You should only experience mild pain after the procedure, which will subside within a few hours. You can take over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen if needed but check with your dentist first, as these anti-inflammatories can thin the blood and encourage excessive bleeding.

If you experience sensitivity to hot, cold or touch use desensitizing products like fluoride rinses and sensitive teeth toothpaste.

Rinse

Rise with warm salt water every 4-6 hours to control discomfort. If a rinse has been prescribed to help with inflammation and bleeding, use it as instructed.

Don’t:

Smoke or use tobacco products.

Tobacco products slow healing, so avoid using them for at least 72 hours after your scaling and root planing procedure. Smoking also introduces bacteria into your mouth, which can lead to infection.

Forget your follow-up appointment.

Schedule a follow-up appointment with your dentist. The majority of patients who have scaling & root cleaning will need ongoing maintenance therapy to clean their teeth, check the status of their gums and to see if further treatment is needed to sustain oral health. Lasting results are only possible with comprehensive treatment addressing all problem areas.
