One of the keys to auto maintenance is keeping vehicle fluids at optimal levels. Oil, transmission fluid, and other essential liquids ensure your car’s components stay in peak condition. Knowing what type of leak your vehicle is currently experiencing makes it easier for auto maintenance experts to diagnose and correct the problem:

These Colors Indicate 5 Types of Vehicle Fluid Leaks

1. Green

Green fluid leaking from your vehicle is antifreeze. The cooling agent is highly toxic to humans and animals and seeps out when your car’s radiator or water pump has loose or deteriorating fittings. Hoses and clamps may have worn out as well, resulting in leaks.

2. Dark Brown or Black

Dark brown or black fluid stains on your driveway are usually motor oil. Fresh motor oil is a clear, golden color, but eventually turns dark brown and black as it cycles through your engine collecting dirt and debris. Old motor oil leaks can occur at engine gaskets or the oil pan.

3. Blue

Windshield wipers feature fluid reservoirs and tubes for storing the cleaner they use to keep your windshield clear. These storage containers can eventually deteriorate, letting blue liquid spill out.

Pink, red, or dark red fluid typically indicates a transmission leak because the return line providing fluid to various systems has broken down or the transmission seal has worn out. Like your engine, a transmission without the proper lubrication wears out quickly because of friction among moving parts.

5. Yellow

Yellow fluid may indicate a radiator leak; however, it can also point to a brake fluid issue. Brake fluid is yellow to dark brown and may escape because of damaged brake lines that compromise your car’s safety. Master cylinder problems can also cause brake fluid leaks.
