When it comes to making funeral arrangements, there are a lot of details to take care of. In addition to choosing a venue, you also have to make choices about monuments and burial plots, which is why it pays to be familiar with your options ahead of time. Here are five different varieties of monuments, and how to choose what is right for your loved one.

Types of Grave Markers

1. Flush Markers

Accepted at most cemeteries, flush markers are stone or metal markers that lie flat against the ground. While some varieties are raised higher than the grass, others are designed to sit flat against the earth, creating a streamlined appearance.

2. Slant or Bevel Headstone

Both slant and bevel headstones have a flat base and contain a smooth front plane that is easy for visitors to read. Bevel headstones are flatter than slant headstones, with the back portion of the headstone being raised a few inches higher than the front. For a more dramatic look, consider slant headstones, which contain a large, upright stone that is cut at an angle to create the inscription surface.

3. Upright Monuments

Upright monuments are secured with a flat base, but contain a stone that is situated to face the viewer. While upright monuments are striking and beautiful, they are not allowed in every cemetery because they can make it more difficult to maintain the grounds.

4. Memorial Benches

Like other monuments, memorial benches are made of stone or metal and are inscribed with information about the deceased. However, these benches are designed to give visitors a place to sit while they think about their loved ones.

5. Ledger Marker  funeral arrangements

Ledger markers are designed to cover the entire burial plot with a large stone slab. Some ledger markers also contain an upright monument to mark the area. They allow for ample inscription space to commemorate your loved one.
