Among advances in car technology, smart keys are particularly useful innovations. By understanding how these devices work, you’ll gain a better awareness of how to keep your car secure—and what to do if something goes wrong. Here is a guide to how these electronic features operate.

What You Should Know About Smart Keys

How Do They Work?

smart keySmart keys work by communicating through a unique radio signal. When you’re near your vehicle, the fob transmits a low-frequency wave that is picked up by your car. Once the special ID is verified, the door will be available to unlock with the push of a button—some models even unlock automatically. To start the car, all you need to do is press a different button.

How Does This Improve Security?

Since smart keys rely on that single, unique identifier, it becomes much more difficult for a thief to steal your car. The vehicle will simply not start unless the fob is within range of the car, so even if someone is able to break into it, they won’t be able to get it on the road. Similarly, fobs are more difficult to copy than traditional keys, so that hurdle also makes the crime more challenging.

What Happens If It Stops Working?

Like any electronic item, it’s possible that at some point your smart key may malfunction or break. For your convenience, the car dealership often provides two fobs just in case you lose one or it experiences a problem. But if you only have one or have already gone through two, a skilled locksmith may be able to create a new fob to replace the old one.
