The fitness journey is one of many achievements and setbacks, but it’s undoubtedly one of the most rewarding transformations you can make. As a CrossFit® athlete, you’ll undergo a few developmental phases, from beginning novice to a potential guru, provided you stick it out for the long haul. To provide insight into this exciting journey, Bombers CrossFit shares three progressions of a CrossFit athlete.

3 Phases a CrossFit Athlete Will Undergo

1. Determined Beginner

The determined beginner is totally new to the CrossFit journey, often bringing little more than a winning attitude. While they generally won’t be the fastest or most capable at this early stage, they’re highly determined and eager to soak up all there is to learn. This positive attitude and motivation is often the driver that pushes people to succeed as serious CrossFit athletes.

2. Selectively Skilled

CrossFitDuring this next phase of the CrossFit journey, an athlete is beginning to discover where their unique skills lie—and where they don’t. At this point, they’ll be highly selective about how they work out, focusing all of their energy where they’re strongest and letting areas of weakness fall to the wayside. For instance, if agility comes easily but weightlifting doesn’t, they’ll likely begin skipping lift days to avoid looking inferior.

3. Long Hauler

As athletes continue to develop, they’ll eventually come to the understanding that fitness isn’t a quick fix, but a long game. At this point, they’ll begin to embrace the fitness journey, recognizing that it will be a lifelong pursuit that requires a great deal of time, work, and motivation. It’s common for athletes in this stage to focus special attention on their weaknesses and areas where they need to improve.
