One of the worst places for an engine to stall is on the highway. It can leave you stranded with your vehicle feeling stressed. Since the problem is not uncommon, it’s helpful to learn what to do in such a situation. From when to call a car towing company to actions to avoid to stay safe, the following do’s and don’ts offer guidance.

Do:

Pull over immediately.

If your engine starts stalling, get to the right as soon as possible and pull over. The farther you move from traffic, the less likely someone could rear-end your vehicle. You may lose features such as power steering and power brakes as a result of the issue, making the car harder to handle. Once pulled over, turn on your hazards.

Call a car towing company if you can’t restart.

car towingIn some cases, it may be possible to restart your engine and get back on the road. However, if it refuses to start or you’re dealing with additional problems, like a flat tire, stay in your vehicle and call a car towing company.

Don’t:

Let anyone out of the car.

Stay in the vehicle at all times, especially if there’s no shoulder or you can’t get completely off the highway. If any people or pets are traveling with you, crank the AC and stay inside until help arrives. If you must leave the car for safety reasons or to use an emergency call box, do so out of the passenger-side door only.

Attempt auto repair until you’re off the road.

Outside your vehicle is the most dangerous place to be while stalled along the highway. Even if you think you can fix the car, do not attempt to do so unless the vehicle is completely off the road with ample clearance. Your safest option is likely to have it towed.
