Rodents have sharp teeth and claws, but the real threat they pose when they enter your home is illness. Many carry diseases which can spread through saliva, blood or feces. The wildlife control experts at American Bio-Tech Wildlife Services in New Milford, CT, explain a few of the most common issues that these unwanted guests introduce.

Wildlife Control Experts on Rodent Diseases

1. Hantavirus

Mice and rats carry the hantavirus. People and animals can get it if they are bitten, have contact with these rodents or their droppings and urine, or by breathing in dust that’s contaminated with droppings and urine. If a nest is stirred, for example, the virus becomes airborne. The infection can lead to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which is a severe and sometimes fatal respiratory disease. There is no vaccine or cure.

2. Plague

The plague is typically spread by infected fleas which bite an animal or person after coming into contact with the infected rodent. It can also spread by direct contact with the rodent. Without a quick treatment of antibiotics, plague can lead to severe illness and death.

3. Leptospirosis

All types of rodents may carry leptospirosis. It’s often spread by ingesting food or water that’s been contaminated with the infected animal’s urine. It may also get around through skin or mucus membranes that come into contact with urine-contaminated materials. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can cause kidney damage, meningitis, respiratory problems, liver failure, and death.

Because rodents carry so many dangerous diseases, wildlife control should only ever be handled by a professional with the right training and tools.
