Proper lawn care is an important part of every homeowner’s schedule. While weekly mowing and purchasing quality lawn equipment are critical, understanding how to mow is just as necessary. Whether you use a riding mower or you push yours, proper patterns for your landscaping will make your home look professionally handled. Here are five designs to try.

Mowing Patterns for a Professional Look

1. Rings

Especially if you have a riding mower, creating rings is a simple yet attractive pattern to try. Start at the edge and continue inward, making circles until you reach the center. The rings get smaller as you move closer to the middle, but the result is clean and efficient.

2. Striping

riding mowerA popular pattern for any lawn, striping means mowing across one area in one pass then turning and mowing in the opposite direction right next to that section, slightly overlapping as you go. This alternating pattern continues until the whole yard is completed. The result is a light and dark striped appearance.

3. Zamboni

If you have a riding mower, consider recreating the pattern of an ice-smoothing Zamboni machine. Begin at the perimeter of the lawn, and then head down the middle to the outside edge, going around again in the opposite direction. Repeat down the middle with another pass next to the first one. Keep this rhythm going until the whole area is covered with overlapping ovals of dark and light green.

4. Diamonds

Begin with a diagonal pass down the center followed by another next to it. Head to the edge of the lawn and create a second stripe in the same direction. To make the crossing stripes, mow a diagonal in the opposite direction with a second pass right next to it.

5. Waves

Waves are similar to striping except the passes are curved. Approach a wave pattern the same way, with one pass in one direction from edge to edge followed by a turn and another pass moving opposite it. You’ll get the light and dark effect but with curvy lines instead of straight.
