Conserving water is not only good for the environment, but it’s good for your wallet as well. From running toilets to the type of hand soap you’re using to how you cook dinner, even small changes can make a big difference. Read on for some advice and handy tips on how to save water at home.

A Simple Guide to Water Conservation

1. Use Foaming Soap

You’ll use half as much water when you use a foaming or liquid soap to wash your hands, versus a bar of soap. Why? When you use a foaming soap, there’s no need to run the tap when you’re lathering up your hands, only when you go to rinse.

2. Fix Your Running Toilet

WaterIs your toilet tank leaking? Here’s an easy way to find out: Put a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank.  If your toilet is leaking, you’ll see the food coloring in the bowl in about 15 minutes. The repair is fairly simple and straightforward, and you can buy the parts at most hardware stores for about $20. If you want to take your water conservation to the next level, flush your toilet after a few uses, rather than every time.

3. Skip the Bath & Take a Shower Instead

According to EPA.gov, you could save more than 11,000 gallons per year, just by conserving water in the bathroom alone! The average bath requires about 70 gallons of water, versus 10-25 gallons for the average five-minute shower.

4. Repair Dripping Faucets

Did you know that a dripping sink or showerhead can waste an astounding 3,000 gallons of water per year? Repair dripping faucets and showerheads as soon as you notice the drip, or, better yet, replace them with a new water-efficient models. Remember to check your outside faucets as well!

5. Cook With Less Water

You can save water at dinnertime by rinsing produce in a bowl instead of running tap water. Using a microwave to defrost frozen foods is also more efficient than running hot water over the packaging. Finally, always running your dishwasher with a full load will save water as well.
