Using an ornamental gate is one way to boost your home’s curb appeal while improving its security and privacy at the same time. Because it is strong, durable, and beautiful, intricate metal fencing remains a popular choice among homeowners. However, constant exposure to elements like moisture and salt may lead to rust and corrosion, causing it to weaken. Below are some tips on how to properly care for one.

What You Can Do to Maintain Ornamental Fencing

Give your metal fence or ornamental gate a good wash once in a while by using water and small amounts of detergent. But if you want to achieve a fresh finish, you will need a steel-bristled wire brush, rust converter, primer, and paint. Use the wire brush to remove loose paint, flaking metal, and rust, rinsing with nonionic detergent or mineral spirits. Apply a phosphoric acid-based converter on rusted metal surfaces to transform them into iron phosphate, and let it sit for a day. Brush away loose flakes, then apply a coat of oil-based or rust-proofing primer before putting on new paint.

Why Is It Important?

If you live in an area with high levels of humidity and salt in the air, your ornamental gate will be more susceptible to this type of damage. Keep an eye out for creeping or sprawling vegetation, like vines and ivy plants, around the fences since these can also do damage over time.

How Often Should Maintenance Be Done?

To keep them structurally sound and durable, perform maintenance at least once a year. Touch up any dings or chipped paint with rust-resistant primer and a fresh coat of enamel. However, in high moisture areas, maintenance should be performed bi-annually to prevent deterioration. Every five years, you should also sand your ornamental gate and apply fresh paint.
