One of the most important and overlooked aspects of residential exteriors is the slope of the surrounding lot. The angle of the ground around your home can directly affect the way drainage occurs and subsequently, the integrity of your home’s structure. Here are a few steps to determine whether or not your home needs lawn grading services.

How to Find Out if You Need Land Grading

1. Place the First Stake

Using a piece of string around 12 feet in length, tie one end around a stake and insert it into the ground near the foundation of your home. Move the loop, so it rests on the ground, and tie the other end to a second stake.

2. Place the Second Stake

3. Adjust the String

Next, slide the string on the second stake until it is horizontally even with the string on the first. In other words, if you were to use a leveler between the two stakes, the string would be level.

4. Measure the Gap

For the final step, use a ruler or tape measure to determine how far the string loop on the second stake is sitting off the ground. If it is 6 inches high or more, your lawn is sloped correctly, and runoff should flow away from your foundation. If it is less than 6 inches, you need lawn grading services.
