Dental pain isn’t always easy to pinpoint, especially when user error is part of the issue. Unfortunately, improper brushing and flossing can lead to several dental problems, including loose teeth, infections, and the onset of periodontal disease. Here are three painful dental problems that can be caused by incorrect brushing and flossing, and how dentists recommend preventing issues.

Problems Caused by Incorrect Brushing & Flossing

1. Dental Decay

If you aren’t brushing and flossing thoroughly enough, plaque can remain on the teeth and harden into tartar. Since bacteria feed off of this biofilm, they can release acids that soften and demineralize dental enamel, leading to decay. When cavities move deep into the tooth, they expose nerves and create internal infections, causing pain. To make sure you are brushing and flossing effectively, talk to your dentist about your technique.

2. Gum Recession

Since gum tissue is made up of slow-growing epithelial cells, it doesn’t grow back like the other tissues of your body. If you brush too aggressively, it can cause gum tissue loss around your teeth, leading to root exposure that leads to extreme dental sensitivity. While dentists can resolve tissue loss by using gum grafts, many patients avoid additional tissue loss by only using soft-bristled toothbrushes and focusing on gentle technique.

3. Tooth Concussions

When you brush too hard, toothbrushes can slip, leading to tooth concussions. When this happens, the nerves inside of the tooth can become inflamed, causing pain. The small blood vessels in the inner pulp chambers sometimes leak, leading to discoloration. Always report dental trauma to your dentist immediately, just in case you need a root canal to prevent pain and preserve the tooth.
