Lighting fixtures add necessary illumination to every room of the house. More than that, they are also exciting accessories that enhance the decor in a room. Just like anything else, fixtures and wiring will require maintenance to keep them functional and safe. When favorite pieces show wear and tear or trouble with electrical connections, knowing the signs will prevent problems down the line. Below are six ways to tell you need lighting repairs.

How to Know You Need Lighting Repairs

1. Flickering

Flickering bulbs can be caused by a couple of reasons. When switch contacts within the fixture are going bad, you’ll typically hear a crackling sound along with flickers. Bulbs that go in and out may also be suffering from loose wiring anywhere from the switch to the circuit breaker panel. Less common but still possible is a problem with the socket itself where the light bulb sits.

2. Frequent Burnouts

The first is loose wiring that may be sending power surges into the fixture and burning out the bulb. Sometimes an incomplete current is the cause, stemming from incompatible bulbs and lamps, or the bulb is simply screwed in too tightly.

3. Brittle Wiring

Over time, wiring becomes more brittle. The heat used when the lights are on coupled with insulation breaking or fraying can lead to brittleness occurring sooner. For older lamps and chandeliers, it is best to have them inspected so they can be rewired to remove any hazards.

4. Frayed Fabric Wires

Fabric cloth wiring is an outdated method used in lighting prior to the 1960s. While fabric wiring in good shape does not pose a risk, frayed components do. If you notice the fabric insulation around wiring is damaged, bring your fixture in for lighting repair to update the system.

5. Lampshade Tears

Tears in lampshades lower the aesthetic appeal of your space. Big sections of damage reduce the value of the fixture and will draw the eye in a negative way. Lamp repair specialists can create a new shade and revitalize your lighting.

6. Damaged Cords

Damaged cords can lead to electrical shock or even fire if not handled quickly. Exposed wiring is never safe and if sections of insulation are missing or wiring appears frayed, do not use your fixture until it is repaired.
