Whether you’re new to ATVs or an avid rider, it’s important to understand basic troubleshooting so that you’re prepared when issues arise mid-ride. One common example that riders may face is a problem with the solenoid, part of the ATV starter. Below is a helpful guide to identifying a solenoid glitch.

What Is An ATV Starter Solenoid?

atv starterLocated on an ATV’s frame near or under the battery, the solenoid is what starts your motorized vehicle. Once the key is turned, electricity passes through this mechanism and ignites the starter. If you turn your key and only hear a clicking noise—and you’ve verified that the clutch is pulled, your battery is charged, and your ATV is in the neutral position—the problem is likely with your solenoid.

How to Test Your ATV Solenoid

To troubleshoot a solenoid on your own, turn the ATV off and locate the solenoid cable, which can be found on the handlebars next to your “On” switch. Run your finger along the cable as it runs down the engine under your seat.

After you’ve checked the connection, grab a voltmeter to test the charge. The voltmeter red cable should be attached to the solenoid wire coil, while the black cable is connected to the black terminal on your ATV’s battery. Since ATVs operate with a 12V battery, your reading should be 12V. If this is not the case, you likely need to replace your solenoid.
