The decision to neuter your dog not only contributes to the canine’s physical health and a lower stray pet population; it also provides key behavioral benefits. Schedule your dog’s neuter appointment as early as 3 months of age to enjoy a more sociable, contented animal, and don’t worry about it affecting your dog’s “maleness.” Canines are not self-conscious about their appearance or notice their testosterone levels have lowered. They simply want to play and eat!

Neuter Your Male Dog & Enjoy These 3 Behavioral Benefits

1. No More Roaming

Dogs roam when they sense females in heat. This instinct decreases significantly after neutering because dogs can no longer smell the airborne pheromones females produce. An unneutered dog in a fenced yard, for example, can still sense the chemical attractants and may try to escape the property. This increases the risk of car-related injuries, getting lost, and fights with other male dogs, among other issues. It also upsets the canine because it cannot respond to the pheromone call coming from a few houses or several blocks away.

2. Less Aggression

neuterNeutered males become less aggressive toward humans and other dogs, particularly male dogs because the need to fight for mating rights dramatically lowers. Neutering reduces if not eliminates the testosterone surges dogs begin experiencing as puppies, resulting in a calmer pooch. Surge levels vary among dogs; however, the earlier you schedule neutering, the more likely you are to terminate these surges and subsequently aggressive behaviors.

3. Reduced Urine Marking

Territorial aggression is frequently displayed as urine marking. In addition to fewer instances of aggression toward other humans and dogs, neutered canines are also less likely to mark their territory with urine. Since this behavior is especially problematic if your pooch spends a good deal of time indoors, early neutering is ideal.
