As fall approaches and you prepare your child to return to school, you have several purchases to make and appointments to attend to make sure they’re ready. Amid all the bustle, don’t forget to include a trip to the optometrist in your plans! A yearly eye exam is vital for growing children to ensure any new vision problems don’t interfere with their schooling.

Vision Problems Impede Learning

Eye ExamsAccording to the American Optometric Association®, “One in four children has an undiagnosed vision problem because changes in their eyesight go unrecognized by both the child and their parents or guardian.” If your child can’t see clearly, a new set of eyeglasses may be all it takes to boost their grades. With corrected vision, they’re better able to read instructions, follow teachers’ explanations and demonstrations, and participate fully in both group work and individual assignments. As a bonus, they’ll be more comfortable, which will help them feel better about school and socialize more freely.

Why School Screenings Aren’t Enough

Many parents assume a separate vision test is unnecessary, as most schools perform vision screenings each year. Unfortunately, these exams are much less in-depth than the testing offered by an optometrist and performed with far less advanced equipment.  In fact, these school screenings only catch 20% to 30% of vision problems, which may delay treatment of minor problems until they develop and worsen.

Prescriptions Change

The need for eye exams doesn’t disappear if your child already has corrective lenses. Your child’s eyes are constantly changing, and they may need a new prescription every year. This month is the best time to schedule, because they’ll receive their updated glasses before school gets into full swing.
