What Flowers Are Dangerous to Household Pets?, Lakeville, Connecticut

When picking fresh flowers to give to pet owners, remember that some blooms are potentially deadly to cats and dogs. Thankfully, favorites like daisies, roses, and orchids are generally non-toxic, but many other popular blooms pose significant dangers. Avoid the following flowers anytime you send a bouquet to a loved one with pets in the home.

5 Fresh Flowers Pet Owners Should Avoid

1. Lilies

Many of the most common lily varieties are poisonous to animals, including calla lilies and Easter lilies. Ingesting small quantities can lead to severe kidney failure in cats if left untreated, and extreme gastrointestinal distress in dogs.

2. Tulips

Tulips belong to the same family as lilies, with many of the same dangers. Tulip bulbs are the most poisonous part of the plant, as they contain high concentrations of tulipalin A and B. These compounds inhibit protein synthesis in animal cells. Symptoms of ingestion may include irritation of the mouth and esophagus, excessive drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea.

3. Daffodils & Hyacinths

4. Azaleas & Rhododendrons

Both of these flowers contain a highly toxic chemical called grayanotoxin. Ingesting even trace amounts can cause excessive salivating, vomiting, and diarrhea. If left untreated, dogs and cats who have eaten these plants may experience coma or cardiac arrest.
