Looking sharp in your neck or bow ties starts with tying it properly. The technique is actually simple once you get the hang of it, just remember not to deviate from the steps below. Doing so will ensure you look polished all day.

Neck Ties

TiesThere are different types of neck tie methods such as the Four-in-Hand, Windsor, and the Half Windsor which were created for specific occasions. For a basic tie, the Four-in-Hand is one of the most popular options because of its simplicity, versatility, and beauty. To start it, the wide end should be on your right and the small end on your left once the tie is around your neck. The small end should be above your navel and remain stationary as you begin to move the wide end.

From the left, place the wide end over the smaller end, then move the wide end under the small end and to the right. Next, take the small end and move it to the right, over the front and to the left where you will create a neck loop and run the wide end through the front loop. You can then tighten the knot by pulling the wide end down and adjust the knot as needed.

Bow Ties

Bow ties became popular around the 19th century in England, as they replaced more complicated knots such as the cravat. The bow tie is typically worn with dinner jackets, during formal occasions, or anytime you want to jazz up an outfit. To start the knot, the bowtie should be lying face up with the left side shorter than the right.

Move the left end to the right side and bring it under the right end and through the neck loop. Fold the right end toward the right and then to the left, which will create a bow. Bring the left end over the middle of the bow, then fold it toward your chest and make a pinch in the fold. Then, push the pinched end through the loop and pull the folded areas of the bow to tighten it. Now, you can now adjust the bow ends until it’s symmetrical on both sides.
