For most families, long summer days are spent outdoors enjoying backyard activities. While you may have a routine to protect yourself from mosquito bites, pet care professionals are quick to remind dog owners to take precautions for their four-legged friends as well. When enjoying outside time with your pooch, keep these tips in mind, so they don’t become targets for mosquitoes.

3 Pet Care Tips to Protect Against Mosquito Bites

1. Choose the Right Insect Repellent

Pet CareHuman bug spray products should never be used on pets because the active ingredient DEET can be detrimental to their health, causing nausea, vomiting, and skin irritation. Instead, visit your local pet care shop to see what products they recommend for insect repellent. If you’re looking for a natural alternative, try rubbing lemon eucalyptus oil into your dog’s coat.

2. Rework Your Walking Schedule

Mosquitoes are most active at dawn or dusk. With this in mind, plan a new walking schedule, so you and your dog aren’t out and about when these bugs are more likely to bite.

3. Fix Screens & Remove Stagnant Water

If you keep screen doors and windows open to enjoy a fresh summer breeze, inspect them at the beginning of the season. Repair any screens with holes or damage, so you can keep mosquitoes out of your home. As a secondary line of defense, remove any stagnant water from your yard. By keeping the area dry and your dog’s water bowl inside, mosquitoes will be less likely to stick around.
