How to Clean Synthetic Rug Fabrics

1. Nylon

Durable, and ideal for high-traffic homes, nylon is a popular choice, especially for areas with heavy furniture like couches and beds. The first step in nylon area rug cleaning is to vacuum daily. For stains, never rub the area. Dab and blot with a dry, clean cloth to remove as much liquid as possible. Follow up with a different clean cloth damp with warm water. Never use bleach; opt for non-bleach liquid laundry detergent instead.

2. Polyester

Polyester looks luxurious and smooth. An affordable choice, it’s also stain- and fade-resistant — but not heat-resistant. Polyester attracts dust and dirt quickly and will develop a yellowish layer. Vacuum at least weekly, and use a vinegar and water solution sprayed directly on stains. Sprinkle baking soda over it, and let it settle for a couple of hours. With a clean cloth, blot and vacuum the rest.

3. Viscose

Viscose, or faux silk, must be handled carefully when area rug cleaning. Never use water, as this will turn fibers yellow and cause permanent damage. Be gentle and use clean, white paper towels or cloth to blot away spills. Utilize an acetic or citric solution, and avoid oversaturating the carpet. A small amount of diluted gentle fabric softener can be used after dabbing with the citric solution to revitalize fibers; but, dry it quickly by opening a window or placing it outside away from direct sunlight. Don’t use a vacuum unless it is on the gentlest setting.

4. Jute

Jute is easy-to-care-for since allergens and dirt don’t cling to its fibers. Press firmly with a clean white paper towel or cloth to remove spills. For solids, scrape with a nail file or dull knife. If the stain is particularly tough, add club soda to a white cloth. You can also try mild soap and dry quickly with a fan or hairdryer. Finish up with a thorough vacuuming.

5. Olefin

Olefin rugs are used in areas with high traffic. This synthetic fiber is inexpensive and resistant to unsightly spots. Unfortunately, it is susceptible to heat and loves oil, which can cause yellowing. The best way to clean olefin is to vacuum regularly. Because of its tighter weave and durability, most carpet cleaning products work well. Choose one specifically for this fiber for the best results.
