Whether you’re new to the exciting world of riding bikes or are simply looking to expand your knowledge, it’s helpful to have a fundamental understanding of how a bicycle functions. To shed some light on this topic, Jim's Bike & Key Shop in Columbia, MO, has shared a helpful guide to bike gears.

About Bike Gears

The Purpose of Bike Gears

As opposed to single-speed bikes, road bikes with multiple gears enable riders to maintain a comfortable speed while pedaling on different types of terrain. Multiple gears will not make a bike faster; gears are simply for comfort and consistency purposes. The highest gear is optimal to use when either descending or riding at high speeds, whereas the lowest gears will keep the pedals spinning on an uphill climb.

How Gears & Shifters Work Together

bikesGears on the bike are controlled by shifters, which are located on the handlebars. Generally, the left shifter controls the front gears, whereas the right shifter  controls the back gear. Certain bikes will only come with a right-handed shifter, but you may be able to customize some models to add left-sided shifting as well. The best way to get an understanding of how your shifters work is through practical application. While pedaling, try experimenting with the shifters and take note of how the pedals spin faster or slower as a result.

When to Shift Gears

Knowing when to shift gears will come with time and experience, but as a general rule of thumb, shift into an easier gear on steep terrain or when the wind is blowing against you. If you see a steep hill ahead, anticipate the climb by shifting gears before you reach the incline. Be sure to continue pedaling as you shift, but be wary of pushing too hard as you go uphill, as this can cause the chain to skip or detach.
