With school letting out and summer arriving, children across Massachusetts will be spending more time outside riding their bicycles. While biking can be a great summer activity, it also brings with it the possibility of serious personal injury. Continue reading to find out how both children and adults can stay safe, enjoy the outdoors and avoid accidents while riding their bicycles this summer.

Bicycle Accidents Can Cause Serious Injuries

A new study produced by the Center for Injury Research and Policy found that hundreds of thousands of children are injured in bicycle accidents every year. The research showed that there are about 600 child-bicycle accidents per day, or about 25 per hour. While most accidents result in only cuts and bruises, 11 percent of the cases include traumatic brain injuries, with children ages 10 to 14 being most likely to suffer harm on a bicycle

Bicycle Safety Rules and Tips

So how can you and your child stay safe while riding bicycles? The most effective safety tool is a helmet. Massachusetts law states that all children under the age of 17 must wear a helmet with straps when riding a bicycle. However, adults can set a good example for their children and protect themselves by also wearing a helmet. State law also stipulates that all riders, regardless of age, must travel in the same direction of traffic unless there is a sign indicating otherwise. Also remember to use hand signals when turning, and place lights on your bicycle when riding at night.

In the Event of a Bicycle Accident

If you or your child is hit by a motor vehicle while riding a bicycle, call the police. The police will secure the scene to ensure that further injury is not caused by other drivers in the area.  They will also draft an official police report, which will be critical if you decide to seek compensation for your injuries. Also remember to seek medical treatment, even if your injuries seem minor; shock from an accident can delay pain sensations. Finally, call a personal injury attorney to handle the logistics of any legal case so you can focus on the well-being of you and your family.
