A three-year-old boy was killed and his four-year-old sister was injured when a van crashed into a stroller in South Boston at approximately 3:15 PM on Wednesday, July 25.

The children were out for a walk with their nanny when a Toyota Prius struck the van, forcing it up onto the sidewalk. East sixth street, the site of the accident, would have normally been lined with cars that would have acted as a barrier between roadway traffic and pedestrians on the sidewalk. On that day, however, the street was empty for a scheduled street cleaning.

Officers responding to the scene found the boy and girl on the ground, according to Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans. Both children were taken to a local hospital where the boy succumbed to his injuries. The young girl is expected to survive, and the nanny pushing the stroll was uninjured.

Both drivers reportedly stayed at the scene and are cooperating with police. No charges have been filed, as officers and investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash. Boston Police have issued a statement asking for any witnesses, videos, or photographs that might help with the investigation.

While police work to ascertain the specific cause of this accident, residents have pointed out that the site of the tragedy has been hazardous for some time. South Boston resident Lauren Flaherty told reporters, “It’s common knowledge that there are accidents on the street every summer. We’ve always been concerned that one would be fatal. To have it happen in this manner is horrific.”
