During septic tank installation, a drain field is set up on top to absorb waste water from the tank. While it’s not a good idea to plant anything with deep roots in this area, it can support a normal lawn. Here are some tips to help you care for the drain field and its lawn after a septic tank installation.

How to Care for the Grass Over Your Drain Field

1. Choose Low Maintenance Grass

When planting over a drain field, choose grass with short roots that requires as little maintenance as possible. The more you use fertilizer and soil amendments, the higher the chance of interfering with the tank or the soil’s ability to absorb water from it. Choose grasses that are well adapted to your area. For example, Bermuda grass is a popular option in Hawaii.

2. Avoid Rototillers or Cultivators

Drain lines from septic systems can come within inches of the surface of your lawn. So when you plant grass over the field, avoid anything that could reach those lines and puncture them, like rototillers, and use caution when tilling the soil.

3. Don’t Add Extra Dirt

4. Keep Manholes & Entry Points Clear

Professionals still need to be able to get to your tank to provide septic tank pumping services. When landscaping in the area, make sure manholes or entry points are always accessible.

5. Water & Maintain as Usual

Once the grass in your drain field starts to grow, maintain it like a normal lawn. It will get some water from the septic system, but keep an eye on its health and water regularly during dry seasons. You can also mow it as you normally would, as long as you don’t use heavy mowing equipment that could strain the tank.
