Upgrading or adding insulation is an effective way to reduce your heating and cooling costs. However, as any home improvement professional will tell you, not all insulating materials are the same. Some are better suited for certain areas of your home than others. Here’s a brief rundown of five different types to keep in mind for your home.

Different Forms of Insulation

1. Blanket

insulation

Available in batts and rolls, blanket insulation can consist of fiberglass, mineral wool, and plastic and natural fibers. Blanket insulation is designed to fit between studs, joists, and rafters, and it’s ideal for most floors, ceilings, and unfinished walls.

2. Foam

Foam board or rigid foam insulation includes polystyrene, polyisocyanurate, and polyurethane materials. It provides a high insulating value with relatively little thickness, which makes it great for interior applications.

3. Concrete Block

Concrete blocks can be filled with insulation, which increases the overall R-value of the wall or foundation. R-value refers to the capacity of a material to resist the flow of heat. Concrete block insulation can be used for unfinished walls and new construction.

4. Loose-Fill & Blown-In

Loose-fill and blown-in insulation can be composed of cellulose, fiberglass, and mineral wool. It’s poured or blown into place using specialized equipment, which means that it can easily fill the space in irregularly shaped areas. It’s ideal for hard-to-reach places like enclosed walls, wall cavities, and attic floors.

5. Structural Insulated Panels

Also known as SIPs, structural insulated panels consist of foam board or straw core insulation. They consist of cementitious, phenolic, polyisocyanurate, or polyurethane materials, and they’re ideal for adding insulation to existing finished areas.
