As summer winds down, your AC unit will have been working hard for months. Therefore, it’s crucial to check on its internal condition and make any necessary repairs before it moves into a fall/winter hibernation period. As a respected HVAC contractor in the Greater Milwaukee area, Donovan & Jorgensen is happy to offer insight on this front. Here, they explain how to give your cooling equipment some end-of-summer TLC.

How to Take Care of Your AC Unit at the End of Summer

1. Change the Air Filter

ac unitAfter months spent cycling air from outside and pumping cool air in, your AC unit will have accumulated a significant amount of dirt, grime, and allergens in its filter. If you have a washable filter, rinse and dry it every few months—especially at the end of the summer. If your unit uses replaceable filters, purchase a fresh one and install it before shutting things down.

2. Remove Obstructions

The outdoor condenser unit of your AC is responsible for turning refrigerant from a gas to a liquid, and it needs ample space to do its job. Throughout the summer, it’s easy for windswept branches and wet leaves to crowd around this metal box, impeding air flow. Clear the area around the condenser unit and trim back overgrown plants as summer comes to a close.

3. Schedule a Checkup

Just like a marathon runner needs a medical checkup after their intense, prolonged workout, your AC unit could use a tuneup after a busy summer. A qualified HVAC contractor will be able to inspect the internal components and outdoor unit for any issues, as well as replace parts that may have become overworked. Schedule a tuneup before the cooler weather rolls in, so any latent issues are addressed before the damage can worsen with shifting temperatures.

If you’ve been using an AC unit all summer, schedule a tuneup with Donovan & Jorgensen as soon as possible.
