Uterine fibroids are a common health condition, especially for women of childbearing age. Because most cases arise without complications or symptoms, they often go undiagnosed by a gynecologist. Genesee Valley Obstetrics & Gynecology PC in Rochester, NY, is an OB-GYN with expertise in diagnosing and treating uterine fibroids. Here they explain more about the condition.

What Are Uterine Fibroids?

gynecologistFibroids in the uterus are round, benign tumors. They are not cancerous and are unrelated to a woman’s risk for developing cancer. In fact, fibroids are made of the same tissues as the uterine wall. Although they’re common, the cause is currently unknown.

Most women who have fibroids don’t realize it unless they experience difficulty becoming pregnant. Other possible symptoms include heavy periods, lower back pain, frequent urination or constipation, and pain during sexual intercourse.

How Are They Diagnosed?

A gynecologist will perform a pelvic exam first, and then an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis. Sometimes they may order an MRI or CT scan, but only when ultrasound is inconclusive.

How Does a Gynecologist Treat Uterine Fibroids?

In most cases, fibroids do not require medical intervention. However, there are multiple surgical options to address complications, such as a myomectomy—a minimally invasive procedure that can be done laparoscopically to remove the growths. In very few cases, the gynecologist may suggest a hysterectomy, but this is usually prescribed only to women who are no longer of child-bearing age.

One non-surgical treatment, uterine artery embolization, involves injecting polyvinyl alcohol into the arteries that feed the fibroids. The polyvinyl alcohol blocks blood supply to the growths, causing them to shrink and dissipate.
