An industrial pump can move many fluids through your machinery. If you know you need a replacement pump or you are looking for something new to improve efficiency, your choice will depend on your needs. As you start shopping, it helps to know some of the most common types and what they’re used for.

Popular Types of Industrial Pumps

1. Centrifugalpumps

A centrifugal pump is the most common type, as it’s a simple and effective system. The pump uses a rotating impeller that transfers energy to the fluid coming into the system. This creates pressure, which increases its speed and moves it through the system. These pumps are used in all types of industries, and they are often found in power plants, oil refineries, homes, and irrigation systems.

2. Magnetic Drive

A magnetic drive pump rotates the fluid impeller with a perfectly balanced magnetic field instead of a motor. These pumps don’t have a shaft coming out of the casing, which reduces the risk of fluid leaks or vapor emissions. This makes them an excellent choice for moving hazardous or corrosive fluids. They also require very little maintenance, and the repairs are usually simple and inexpensive when they are needed.

3. Gear

A gear pump moves fluid via displacement. The gears rotate, and as they move apart, they create a void of space, which is filled with the fluid. They then carry the fluid around to the other side of the pump, where the gears mesh back together and push the fluid out. They experience less friction loss since they don’t use valves, which makes gear pumps an excellent choice for high viscosity fluids like oil or fuel.
