While having a cavity filled is a relatively easy procedure, your eating habits impact the success of the treatment. That’s why dentists provide extensive post-filling instructions, including what and what not to eat. Peter A. McIntyre, DDS, PC recommends the following advice to his patients in Colorado Springs, CO.

Do:

Chew slowly & gently.

For a few days after the procedure, try to chew on the side of your mouth without the new filling to avoid dislodging it. Additionally, if your mouth is still numb from the procedure, you may accidentally bite your cheek or tongue. Use slow and gentle bites to reduce the pressure of the food on your sensitive tooth, which may cause pain or irritation.

Keep your mouth closed.

Your filling may be sensitive or even a bit painful for a time. Cold air may increase sensitivity, so keeping your mouth closed while chewing can increase your comfort.

Steer clear of hot & cold drinks.

Hot and cold beverages may also cause discomfort. Refrain from drinking these beverages until sensitivity has passed. If it continues beyond a week, ask your dentist about other remedies.

Don’t:

Eat sticky foods.

dentistIt may be a while before your filling is completely healed. Skip sticky treats, like candy or gummies, until the filling is properly set. Sticky foods may dislodge the filling, which will require an emergency visit to your dentist. Additionally, sweets and sugary snacks often increase sensitivity, so stick to savory or natural treats until the filling has healed.

Consume anything too hard.

Hard foods like nuts, ice, or crackers can dislodge fillings. Avoid anything that requires a lot of chewing until you’ve been given approval from your doctor.
