Welcoming a floppy-eared friend into your home is very exciting. But before you head to the pet store, you may want to learn more about what to expect. While rabbits tend to require less attention than dogs, for instance, they still need specialized care. To ensure a hare-monious transition, keep these tips in mind.

How to Care for Your Pet Rabbit

1. Habitat

Rabbits like space to hop around. If you plan to keep your bunny in a cage, purchase the largest one your space can accommodate. At minimum, the cage should measure 30 by 18 inches. Your rabbit also needs absorbent bedding like treated paper, a bowl for food, and a bottle of water. Give your rabbit plenty of chew toys, like ones made from wood, to control teeth length. If you plan to let your bunny out in a room, make it safe by covering wires with flex tubing. You should cover baseboards and other areas your rabbit may want to gnaw on as well.

2. Diet

You should also provide plenty of hay and specially formulated treats to aid digestion and tooth health. Feel free to treat to your rabbit to the occasional carrot or lettuce stalk, but do so sparingly to avoid stomach problems. Limit vegetable intake for rabbits under six months of age.

3. Socialization

Rabbits require regular socialization to remain tame. Gently scoop up and hold your rabbit close to your chest for optimal comfort, similar to how you would a cat. When they’re roaming free, always supervise your rabbit to ensure safe, secure exploration. Rabbits are prey to large birds and should not be left outside alone.
