Summer heatwaves can leave humans uncomfortable and dehydrated, and it’s also true for dogs who have to keep cool under layers of fur. That’s why the veterinarians at Dells Animal Hospital in Wisconsin Dells stress the importance of keeping animals hydrated in the heat. Doing so will prevent serious health problems and keep your pet energized. Below south-central Wisconsin’s premier veterinarians explain how to ensure your dog doesn’t get dehydrated this summer.

How to Keep Your Dog Hydrated in the Summer Heat

Incorporate Water in Daily Exercise

Your pet’s body temperature can rise quickly while running and playing outside in the heat, leading to discomfort, dehydration, and a possible heatstroke. To keep the pup cool and hydrated, add water activities to outdoor fun during warm weather. Letting the dog splash around in a kiddie pool or run through sprinklers will help regulate their body temperature.

Remember to Refill All Water Bowls

Wisconsin-Dells-Wisconsin-veterinarianSimilar to their human companions, canines should be able to quench their thirst whenever they get the urge. To ensure your animal has water whenever they need it, keep bowls stationed inside the house. Check the water level in each bowl every hour and refill if needed. Whenever the dog goes outside, place a water dish in a shaded area for the pet to remain hydrated in the heat. Bring in the bowl afterward; this will prevent the moisture from attracting pests to the yard.

Add Water to Wet Food

If you often feed your canine companion dry food, consider switching to canned varieties during warmer weather. If your dog rarely stops by the water bowl, the food will help keep them hydrated. Wet food contains 80 to 85% water, compared with 10% water or less in dry kibble. Just make sure to mix in the liquid thoroughly so the meal is still appetizing to your pooch.

Beyond keeping your dog hydrated, scheduling regular veterinarian checkups at Dells Animal Hospital is the best way to keep them happy and healthy.
