The swimming pool pump is a critical part of the system’s water filtration process. When this piece of equipment is leaking, you may see a few telltale signs that indicate a problem. Here are the top reasons why the pump is leaking.

Why Is the Swimming Pool Pump Leaking?

1. Motor Shaft Seal

Water leaking from the bottom of the swimming pool pump usually indicates that you need to replace the shaft seal within the motor assembly. This seal is supposed to stop water from leaking while the motor is on. It also keeps the motor dry. A compromised seal will lead to a puddle under the pump and a noisy system.

2. Intake or Suction Line

One common reason for a pump leak is a suction problem. When the intake or suction line is malfunctioning, you may see cloudy pool water and notice weak suction at the skimmer basket or drain. What starts as a slow drip usually ends up being a spray that eventually leaves a puddle every time you engage the pump. Water levels in the pool, low pressure in the filter tank, and air bubbles at the strainer will occur. The pump will also need consistent refilling.

3. Return Line

Sometimes the screws in the gasket and flange system are missing, stripped, or loose, while other times poorly kept water chemistry will affect these components. Over time, leaking will begin.

4. Underground Crack or Tear

If you can’t detect where the leak is stemming from, you may have a crack or tear underground. Usually the problem is in the threaded pipe fitting connection, and you may notice water around the swimming pool pump. Repairs to an underground crack must be performed by a pool contractor, who can accurately dig up the broken area and replace damaged pipes.
