Whether you’re a homeowner with a cracked driveway or a contractor who needs a parking lot installed, there are several road paving materials that will get the job done. Since the paved area will endure a lot of stress from vehicles, it’s important to find a material that will be durable without being too expensive. So, below is a guide to hot-mix paving along with why it’s advantageous to install it during your next paving project.

The Basics of Hot-Mix Paving

What Is Hot-Mix Paving?

An estimated 95% of hot-mix pavement consists of sand, gravel, and stone that is blended together using asphalt cement, which comes from crude oil. The cement is heated up to between 300 and 350 degrees Fahrenheit and is added to the sand, gravel, and stone mixture at the manufacturing plant. The end product is placed onto a cement truck so that it can be driven to the construction site. Then, it’s applied to the desired location and smoothed out using a roller machine.

How Is Hot-Mix Paving Different From Other Materials?

As a result, it can be transported over more lengthy distances and used during winter construction projects. Cold-mix pavement is the most affordable of the three since it doesn’t require heat. However, it’s best used for road repairs since it doesn’t have the flexibility that results from the heating process.

What Are the Benefits of Hot-Mix Paving?

One of the major reasons hot-mix paving is a desirable product for jobs is that traffic can drive over it once the cooling process is complete. It’s considered a flexible product that can handle the wear and tear of vehicles and the elements. It can also deter water, which prevents moisture from seeping in and causing damage. Because hot-mix pavement is more durable and requires less fixing, it’s more cost effective when compared to other materials, particularly concrete. It’s also known for its smooth finish, making roads less dangerous for drivers.

Another benefit of hot mix paving is that it can bring a severely damaged road back to life. Instead of demolishing an old road and starting from scratch, hot-mix road paving can be applied through a process called rubblization, which allows paving contractors to smooth out the current road and apply hot-mix materials over the top.
