Taking your dog for a walk during the day is a fun way to spend time with your furry friend and get them the exercise they need. However, if you’re not careful, the hot asphalt warmed by the summer heat can cause significant issues for your pet. Consider the following information about how to take necessary precautions to protect your dog while walking outside in hot weather.

How Hot Is Too Hot?

The warmth in the air has little to do with how hot a surface feels when exposed to the summer sun. Vehicles, asphalt, metal, pavement, and wood surfaces all retain heat during hot weather and stay warm for hours. In some cases, the temperatures can reach 145 degrees Farenheight.  A basic rule to remember is that if asphalt is too hot for you to walk on barefoot, then it’s too hot for your furry friend. You can test the heat of the ground by pressing your hand to it for at least eight seconds. If the warmth is comfortable, it may be safe to walk your dog.

When Is the Best Time to Walk Your Dog?

asphaltSince outdoor surfaces can retain heat after the sun goes down, you still have to be careful about taking your dog for a walk in the early evening. Instead, consider walking them later in the evening after the sunset, or walking them early in the morning before the temperatures rise. During these times, asphalt and pavement will be cool enough for your furry friend to walk comfortably.

What Are Other Ways to Keep Your Pet Protected From Hot Asphalt?

If you must walk your dog during the afternoon or early evening, try to walk them in grassy areas or under the shade. Whenever possible, avoid sidewalks, driveways, or other paved surfaces. You can also put dog shoes on them to protect their paws from burns. However, if your furry friend doesn’t like to wear them, you can also keep their paws moisturized to make them less susceptible to injuries from hot asphalt and pavement.
