Washing your face is such a simple task, it’s hard to believe there is a right or wrong way to do it.  Improper technique may contribute to dryness, irritation, acne, and premature wrinkles. The professional staff at Gateway Dermatology PC in Lincoln, NE, encourage patients to adopt the following habits when they wash.

Tips to Wash Your Face Correctly

1. Avoid Alcohol

Cleansers containing alcohol may leave the surface feeling clean, but they actually dry out your skin. While people with oily, acne-prone skin may think this is a good thing, it promotes excess oil production and irritates the pores, leading to more breakouts. Dry skin also leads to fine lines and wrinkles. Choose gentle, cream cleansers for the best results. The providers at Gateway Dermatology PC can recommend brands and products ideal for your skin type if you’re uncertain.

2. Use Lukewarm Water

You may also feel hot water is key to getting clean; however, this too dries out your skin. Use lukewarm water to apply cleanser.

3. Avoid Scrubbing

Gentle exfoliation is wonderful for the skin, but avoid abrasive cleansers.  Using a washcloth, mesh sponge, or anything other than your fingertips can irritate your skin. Pat the skin gently with a soft, clean towel to dry.

4.  Apply Moisturizer

Dab on serum or moisturizer delicately, especially around the eye, rather than smearing. Scrubbing, pulling, and rubbing will aggravate acne and stretch the skin, causing wrinkles.

5.  Limit Washing

Wash your face once in the morning and once at night.  Perspiration, especially when wearing a hat or helmet, irritates the skin. Wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating.
