Home insulation benefits your home throughout the year, whether that means trapping heat indoors during chilly winters or slowing the transmission of heat during summer. It can even save you money on electricity, as you won’t have to run your HVAC system as hard to stay comfortable. Insulation doesn’t last forever, though, and it will require a replacement once it exhibits signs of deterioration.

5 Signs Your Home Insulation Needs a Replacement

1. Poor HVAC Performance

If your heating and cooling system has been less effective in recent years, it might be because your insulation isn’t doing its job. Consider having it replaced if you’ve been turning the AC higher than usual this summer, or if your electric bills have been skyrocketing during peak HVAC seasons.

2. Increased Allergic Symptoms

home insulationDo you experience allergy- or asthma-like symptoms at home but nowhere else? You might have a mold or mildew infestation, which might be growing in your insulation. When it wears out or gains holes, wall or attic insulation can easily absorb moisture, quickly becoming a haven for mold.

3. Pests

As it wears down, old insulation becomes ideal nesting material for rodents and other pests. Mice, rats, bats, and birds are just a few common examples of creatures that can either live in worn insulation or use it for nests. If you see droppings or other signs of pests, plan to have your insulation replaced, and perhaps call an exterminator. You might also consider using spray foam insulation, which makes a less appealing nesting material for animals.

4. Ice Damming (Winter)

Did your home develop large icicles or ice dams last winter? If so, that’s likely a result of poor attic insulation melting the snow on your roof, which then refreezes and causes ice dams. Ice damming can cause serious roof damage, but you can avoid future occurrences by having your home insulation replaced this summer.

5. Extreme Indoor Temperature Fluctuations

Well-insulated homes take a while to respond to outside temperature changes, as good insulation impedes the transmission of heat. If your home responds rapidly to temperature shifts, however, that likely means your insulation has thinned down. You might either need to replace it or add more.
