When visiting your primary care physician for a check-up, certain symptoms may prompt them to refer you for a cancer screening. While this process can be intimidating, understanding the equipment used and how these high-tech devices determine your body’s health can help put you at ease before considering future treatment. If you’re visiting a radiology center in the near future for a PET/CT scan, here’s what you can expect.

What Is a PET/CT Scanner?

PET stands for positron emission tomography. In essence, this piece of machinery provides image testing, so your doctor can determine whether your body is positive for a particular disease. The patient swallows, inhales, or is injected with a special dye that contains radioactive tracers. Organs and tissue absorb this material, which collects in regions of higher chemical activity. As such, the resulting scans show brighter colors in areas where a disease exists.

What Are These Scans Used For?

Cancer ScreeningPET/CT scans are common for cancer screening. They help diagnose a myriad of issues from breast cancer to melanoma, thyroid carcinoma, and lymphoma. They are also beneficial for lung screenings and diagnosing neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.

Before your scheduled cancer screening, refrain from eating or drinking anything but water for at least four hours. It is recommended that you limit exercise for 24 hours as well. Arrive at your appointment at least 15 minutes early and wear warm, comfortable clothes as the scanner room is typically kept cold. Set aside at least 90 minutes for the procedure as you’ll need to sit and rest for up to an hour after the tracer is injected to let it sink in. The scan itself should take no more than 15 minutes.
