Golf is game played and loved the world over. While most players are familiar with the collared shirts and driving ranges, many are unfamiliar with where those traditions originated. The Birthplace

Golf-like games can be traced back to 100 B.C. The Roman game of paganica required a stick to move a leather ball across a field. Since then, many adaptations have developed. However, the true game of golf took root in Scotland in the 15th century. It became popular after the ban on sports was lifted in 1502, in which time May Queen of Scots and King James IV took up the hobby. As soon as royalty became invested, all of Great Britain took notice and followed suit. By the 17th century, the first British Open tournament was opened for players of exceptional skill.

The Equipment

As soon as golf became popular, its equipment began to shift and evolve. golfEarly on, balls were made from wood, then feather-stuffed leather. These were known as feathery's and were standard pieces of equipment until the mid 1800's. Club shafts were crafted from hardwood, including hazel, holly, beech, or ash, while the head of the club was hand-created using iron and leather. Specialty shoes, putters, and attire also became the norm. All of this equipment was fairly expensive to purchase, making the sport more popular amongst the upper class.

Golf In America

The first golf course built on American soil debuted in 1888, built by Jon Reid. As a Scotsman, he set up a set of three holes in Yonkers, New York. He and his friends formed the St. Andrews Club of Yonkers, which was the first official golf club in the U.S. Though the spread of the sport was slow, Chicago gained momentum and, by 1900, had 26 golf courses within its city limits. Since that time, the country has produced some of the top players in history including Harry Vardon, who won six Open Championships between 1896 and 1914. Willie Anderson, Arnold Palmer, Bryan Nelson, and Tiger Woods also left their mark on the history of the game.
