School is out, and the sun is shining. Summer is the ideal time for kids to get outside and enjoy playtime in nature. But, as always, it’s important to make sure they’re safe while doing so. The team at A Rising Star Children’s Center offers fun and educational before- and after-school programs to families in Cortlandt Manor, NY, and the surrounding areas. Here, they explain some do’s and don’ts of summer play.

Do:

Apply sunscreen, even on cloudy days.

Sunscreen is crucial to protect skin from harmful UV rays. Sunburns are painful, but it’s also essential to prevent long-term effects. Over time, unprotected exposure can increase your child’s risk of skin cancer and permanent damage. Apply protection within two hours of going outside, even on cloudy days.

Ensure they wear a helmet during sports.

Kids might not want to wear a helmet as their heads can get sweaty or they may fear not looking “cool.” However, this protection is vital when riding bikes, skating, or playing sports like football, as it can save their life in case of an accident. Even if they’re only riding around the block, be strict about this rule.

Don't:

Leave them unattended.

before- and after-school programFor most of the year, families can rely on before- and after-school programs to keep their kids safe. However, during the summer it’s just as vital to stay vigilant. Even if the children are playing in a backyard pool or play set, make sure they’re within sight of an adult or trustworthy teen. Incidents can happen within seconds; having a supervisor present ensures they get the help they need right away.

Feed them sugary snacks.

Kids love sweet snacks but excess sugar, combined with hot temperatures, can contribute to dehydration, stomach aches, and fatigue. Instead of indulging their taste for fruit juices, soda, and ice cream, give kids plenty of water and whole fruit and veggies like apples, oranges, strawberries, and celery with peanut butter. Eating protein will also combat heat-related fatigue, so nuts, cheese, and yogurt are excellent options as well.

With these tips, you can ensure your child has a safe, fun summer. Once the school year starts, turn to A Rising Star Children’s Center for quality before- and after-school programs.
