With summer in full swing, you may be walking alongside the beach, taking a dip in the pool, or dressing up for a night out with loved ones. However, it’s important to follow a summer foot care routine even when you’re out enjoying the warm weather. Keeping your feet healthy in the summer months doesn’t have to be difficult, especially if you follow the four tips listed below.

How to Take Care of Your Feet in the Summer

1. Avoid Going Barefoot

Whether you’re at the community pool or in the changing room after, resist the urge to take your shoes off and walk around barefoot. Public places that are moist and warm provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. If you have a blister or open cut on your foot and then walk barefoot in these areas, you may develop an infection or foot fungus. Opt for flip-flops while at the pool or in a communal shower.

2. Reconsider Flip-Flops

When you want to wear sandals, look for styles with padded footbeds and arches to avoid stress fractures, heel pain, tendonitis, and hammertoes. If you want to wear flip-flops, save these summertime staples for pool days and changing rooms.

3. Wear Comfortable Shoes

New shoes or ill-fitting ones can cause blisters, so stick to a pair of broken-in shoes. If you do need to buy a new pair, look for comfortable ones made from a soft material like leather. Also, avoid wearing brand new shoes for long hours; instead, wear them in short increments to break them in over time.

4. Treat Cracked Skin

During the summer, the warm weather can cause your feet to sweat and then dry up, leaving cracks on the bottoms. If these cracks and dry skin aren’t properly treated, you may wind up with bloody sores or even an infection. To keep your feet soft and healthy, use a foot file or pumice stone to remove any hard, dry skin and then apply foot cream as needed.
