During the summer, livestock are more at risk of overheating from the weather. To prevent this, you should take careful precautions throughout the season. Here, the farm supplies team at Clifton Feed and Service Center in Bosque County, TX, shares a few tips to keep livestock safe all summer.

Farm Supplies Store’s 4 Ways to Keep Livestock Cool

1. Shade

Provide plenty of shade, so the animals can get out of the sun when necessary. Plant trees in places that still have wind movement to keep the livestock comfortable or purchase farm supplies such as misters and sprayers to provide comfort in feedlots. If you lack large trees or can’t plant any, put up a simple, open-sided tent in the pasture. These are typically lightweight and movable, so you can use them wherever the animals are more comfortable.

2. Plenty of Water

Animals should have access to fresh, clean water during hot days. Staying hydrated will prevent them from becoming overheated. Freeze plastic tubs overnight to make large ice blocks that can keep the water cool and refreshing. Make sure the cows and other animals have enough troughs to limit competition and provide sufficient access to water. Also, use feeds like silages and pasture, which have increased water content.

3. Work Times

4. Ventilation

If you must keep the animals in a barn or other enclosed structure, make sure the space is adequately ventilated. While standard windows and vents may not be able to get the job done, a large livestock fan is an excellent option. Try mounting the fans on the walls to prevent animals from knocking them over and becoming injured.
