Choosing a senior living home can be a daunting task, especially with a wide range of factors to consider: location, quality of the facility, the staff, services and amenities, and so much more. It’s important to choose a place that meets the health care needs of your loved one while also maintaining a home-like atmosphere. The best way to evaluate a home is to visit. Here’s what to look for on your tour.

5 Things to Watch for When Touring a Senior Living Home

1. Enjoy a Meal

Good food can be a source of joy and comfort as well as nutrition. Be sure to have a meal at the facility, and ask about the menu. Are balanced meals provided? Ask about how special dietary needs are handled, and whether food is available outside of meal times.

2. Check out Activity Time

Look for a varied schedule that includes mental and physical activities as well as off-site trips. Sit in on an activity to observe how it’s facilitated. Is everyone included and are activities adapted for differently abled residents?

3. Walk the Grounds

Spending time outdoors has been shown to increase happiness and creativity. Take a walk around the grounds and ask how much time senior living residents can spend outside. Find out what kind of security and supervision is available outdoors for residents who need special assistance.

4. Meet the Staff

You’ll probably be given a tour by a designated staff member, but make sure to chat with the other workers you encounter along the way. Are they friendly and happy to answer your questions? Take time to observe the staff interacting with the residents. Look for a senior living home where the caretakers genuinely care about the residents and seem invested in their well-being.

5. Talk to Residents

Talking to the residents is the best way to gain a true picture of life at the senior living home you’re evaluating. Ask for their honest opinions about the facility, the staff, and the atmosphere. If there is a resident board or council, ask to speak with a representative.
