It’s summer, and there’s no better time to pay special attention to your vehicle’s air conditioning (AC) system than this season. If you’re planning to go on vacation with your family, and you’re traveling by car, make sure that the cooling system can keep everyone comfortable throughout the trip. Listed below are some issues you should look out for that might require car AC repair.

4 Signs That You Need Car AC Repair

1. Not Cooling

If your AC does not produce the same temperature air as before, it could be caused by one of its parts failing, including the compressor, condenser, evaporator, blower motor, or solenoid. A Freon™ leak or a clogged expansion tube can also manifest this symptom, so you need to bring your vehicle to an auto repair shop to have it diagnosed.

2. Weak Airflow

If the air conditioner still blows cool air, but the flow is weaker than usual, the blower hose may have come loose, or the ventilation fan has stopped working. An accumulation of mold and mildew in the evaporator core can also block airflow. Have a car AC repair specialist do a performance check to verify.

3. Strange Noises

car ac repairA failing compressor or a worn out compressor clutch or serpentine belt will produce a rattling noise when you turn on the AC. However, cross-contamination of refrigerants, which means that left-over refrigerant from a different system enters yours through the equipment used, can also cause your unit to make strange noises.

4. Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerants can be harmful to the environment. Unfortunately, other than the previously mentioned symptom of your unit not cooling, there really is no way for you to determine if the refrigerant is leaking unless you bring it in for car AC repair. Technicians can use a black light or refrigerant sniffer to check for leaks.
