Whether it’s a trip to cool off in the mountains or a steamy beach vacation, summer is the perfect time to get away. For people with spine problems, however, sitting in an airplane can bring significant discomfort. Follow these tips to provide back and neck pain relief throughout your travels.

5 Tips for Back & Neck Pain Relief While Traveling

1. Lift Luggage Carefully

Check heavier bags to avoid lifting them. If you can, book nonstop flights, so you don’t have to heave your carry-on into the overhead bin more than once. Lift luggage in stages: first to the arm of the seat, next to the back, then all the way up. Don’t twist while lifting.

2. Keep Moving

Sitting too long in one position can lead to stiffness and pain. Request an aisle seat that allows you to get up and move around throughout the flight. You can also do exercises in your seat—check out this back exercise guide for ideas.

3. Create A Spine-Soothing Seat

4. Plan Your Medications

Plan ahead to stock up on prescription medications that treat your back pain and keep them in your carry-on, not in checked bags. Don’t remove them from the original packaging since that can create problems at security.

5. Treat Yourself to an Upgrade

If you have the money to splurge or some miles saved up, opt for an upgrade. Many flights now offer “plus” or “premium” economy classes that don’t cost as much as business or first class, but still give you more room than standard seats. Being able to recline, have space, and stretch your legs can make a huge difference in staving off spine discomfort.
