A common design tip for small rooms is to use a mirror to visually expand the space, making the room feel lighter and more open. To get the right effect, it’s important to choose the right specifications for the piece. Before a mirror replacement or installation, go over these three points with your commercial glass supplier.

What to Consider Before Getting a Mirror Replacement for a Small Space

1. Size

The larger the mirror, the more dramatic the enlarging effect will be. However, a large piece can also become the focal point of a room, which isn’t always what people want. When you’re balancing a mirror with other elements such as furniture and wall hangings, choose one that is about two-thirds the size of the focal piece.

2. Shape

This is helpful when you’re fitting a rectangular mirror into an oddly shaped space. It also means you can choose circles, ovals, and more unusual, decorative configurations. Measure the area where you’re hanging the mirror and remember that unusual shapes draw the eye just like larger mirrors do.

3. Position

Where you place a mirror has a major effect on the look of the room. A narrow horizontal mirror high on the wall produces the illusion of higher ceilings, while one that is placed opposite a window will amplify the natural light in the space. Make sure there are several inches of space left between the mirror and other design elements—otherwise the room may begin to look crowded.
