Dental sensitivity can be a big problem, making it hard to enjoy cold foods, fresh fruits, and even ice water. However, dentists warn that you shouldn’t believe everything you hear about tooth sensitivity. Here are three myths about tooth sensitivity, and why being in the know can help you.

Myths Surrounding Tooth Sensitivity

1. Sensitivity Isn’t a Serious Problem

While many cases of tooth sensitivity aren’t immediately dangerous, they can indicate deeper dental problems such as tooth decay, root exposure, and lingering infections. Anytime you are dealing with ongoing sensitivity, you should meet with your dentist to make sure your teeth are healthy.

2. Brushing More Will Calm Sensitivity

dentistSince certain anti-sensitivity toothpastes contain ingredients that temporarily resolve sensitivity, some people assume brushing more frequently will resolve the problem. However, since sensitivity can also be caused by aggressive brushing and gum tissue erosion, you shouldn’t brush more than is recommended by your dentist. Additionally, since the pH of your saliva changes after you eat and softens dental enamel, brushing immediately following meals can erode enamel and exacerbate sensitivity.

3. Tooth Sensitivity Isn’t Treatable

Although many people assume sensitivity is a permanent condition, it is highly treatable, especially in its early stages. Dentists can repair dental cavities, craze lines, and fractures to stop nerve exposure and sensitivity. If you have root exposure caused by aggressive brushing, the area can be covered by a dental crown or light-cured composite resin.
