The effects of chronic kidney disease can be a challenge for both men and women, but there are unique side effects that women should understand and discuss with their doctors. Incidents of kidney failure are rising, particularly among African American women. Here’s what women who have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease need to know about how it uniquely affects their health.

3 Effects of Chronic Kidney Disease on Women’s Health

1. Sexual Desire

Physical, as well as emotional and psychological, factors contribute to low interest in sex among women with kidney disease. Managing a chronic illness, along with the family and professional challenges that come with it, is stressful and draining. This can deplete anyone’s interest in maintaining an active sex life. Medications and reduced hormone levels also affect a woman’s sex drive.

Some women find that after adapting to managing the illness and regular dialysis, their normal interest in sexual activity returns. It may be difficult to discuss this with your kidney doctor, but they can refer you to resources that help you to manage this important aspect of your life.

2. Irregular Periods

Dialysis can make periods irregular or cause them to cease altogether. Treatment with a synthesized version of the hormone erythropoietin can bring periods back in some women. The treatments increase the hormone levels and treat the anemia associated with chronic kidney disease.

3. Pregnancy & Fertility

chronic kidney diseaseBecause of irregular or absent periods, it can be difficult for women with kidney disease to become pregnant. It is, however, possible, so patients should continue to use birth control if they do not wish to become pregnant. Women who do want to get pregnant should talk with their kidney doctor and other health care providers.

Erythropoietin treatments can improve fertility. According to a national survey on pregnancy outcomes among women on dialysis, 78% of these pregnancies resulted in a live birth, and women were more likely to be diagnosed with preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication that comes with high blood pressure and can damage the organs.
